Opening a Bank Account in Japan as a Foreigner: The 6-Month Rule and Workarounds
Many Japanese banks refuse to open accounts for foreigners during their first 6 months. Sakura walks through which bank to try, what documents to bring, and the exact Japanese to use at the counter.
The first hurdle of Japan life: opening a bank account
Hi everyone! Sakura here ๐
You've got an apartment, a phone, a residence card. The next critical task: a Japanese bank account. And many newcomers hit a wall โ "Sorry, we can't open one yet because you've been here less than 6 months."
Let me show you how to get past it.
The infamous 6-month rule
Major commercial banks (MUFG/Mitsubishi UFJ, SMBC/Mitsui Sumitomo, Mizuho) often refuse account opening for foreigners who've been in Japan less than 6 months. This is because foreign-exchange law classifies you as a non-resident during that period.
The workaround: ใใใกใ้่ก (Yucho Bank โ the postal-service bank).
Tip: Yucho will open accounts for newly-arrived foreigners much more readily. You may have transfer restrictions for the first 6 months, but salary deposits and bill auto-pay work fine.
Pre-visit checklist
Missing even one document = same-day rejection. Bring all of these:
- ๅจ็ใซใผใ โ your residence card, with your new address registered on the back.
- Passport โ for ID verification.
- Japanese phone number โ must be in your name. (No phone = no account.)
- ๅฐ้ (personal seal) โ many branches now accept signature, but bring a cheap mitomein (acknowledgment seal) to be safe. Not a self-inking Shachihata.
- My Number card โ required if you plan to use transfer functions.
Name spelling must match your residence card exactly. If your card has KIM TARO in romaji, the application form needs KIM TARO โ not Taro Kim or ใญใ ใฟใญใฆ. Mismatches break international transfers later.
The exact phrases for the counter
I'd like to open an account.
I'd like to apply for a new account.

Reason for opening the account

At the counter
Application dialogue
What can I help you with? I'd like to open a new account. Certainly. Do you have ID? I have my residence card and passport.
ATM fee awareness
Japanese ATMs are notoriously fee-heavy outside business hours.
- In-bank ATM during business hours: usually free
- In-bank ATM evenings/weekends: ยฅ100โยฅ220 per withdrawal
- Konbini ATM:
- Other banks' ATMs: usually higher
Some banks waive fees if you receive salary into the account or maintain a minimum balance. Ask about ๆๆฐๆๅช้ (fee preferential treatment) tiers.
