Don't Put 軽油 in Your Rental Car: Japan's Gas Pump Trap

If you're renting a car in Japan — especially in Hokkaido or Okinawa — you'll hit the self-service gas station (セルフ) sooner or later. Most travelers are fine. A small minority make an engine-destroying mistake at the pump.

Let me make sure you're in the safe majority.

⚠️ The trap: 軽油 (keiyū) is NOT 'light car fuel'

At every Japanese gas station you'll see pumps labeled 軽油けいゆ. Reading the kanji literally: light + oil. Japan also has light cars (軽自動車けいじどうしゃ) — the small 660cc class.

So the natural mistake: "軽油 must be the fuel for 軽 cars!"

It is not. 軽油 is diesel. Used for large trucks and a small handful of diesel passenger cars.

Japan's 軽自動車けいじどうしゃ are gasoline vehicles. Putting 軽油 in one destroys the engine — and rental contracts make you pay the repair.

💡 Why is it called 軽油?

In refinery terms, 軽油 is light compared to heavy oil. The name describes the molecular weight of the fuel, not the size of car it's for. The naming feels misleading to outsiders because it intersects with another light term in Japanese (light cars).

🎨 The lifesaver: color-coded nozzles

Japan mandates color codes for fuel nozzles. Even if your Japanese is shaky, trust the colors:

Tap the screen, pick payment — credit card or cash. Use 'card' (カード) for ease.
Pick fuel type — for most rentals tap レギュラー (red).
Pick amount — choose 満タンまんタン (fill it up) or specify yen amount.
Pump it in — clicks off automatically when full. Replace nozzle, take receipt.

🚙 The fuel cap is your safety net

Before the pump screen, walk to your gas cap and look. Every Japanese fuel cap is labeled:

レギュラー or 無鉛むえん (unleaded) → red nozzle.
ハイオク → yellow nozzle.
軽油けいゆ (DIESEL) → green nozzle.

The rental agency also marks this on your contract. Read it before you drive off the lot.
