How to Ask Someone to Repeat Themselves in Japanese (Without Sounding Rude)
Lost track of what someone just said in Japanese? Sakura walks you through the polite, casual, and clarifying ways to ask for a repeat — from もう一度お願いします to つまり~ですか.
Hi everyone! Sakura here 🌸
One of the scariest moments in real Japanese conversation isn't speaking — it's not understanding what the other person just said. The temptation is to nod and smile and pretend. Don't.
Japanese has a beautifully tiered set of phrases for "Wait, what?" — polite ones for strangers, soft ones for friends, and clarifying ones when the words were clear but the meaning wasn't. Let's go through them.
🗣️ 1. Polite — for strangers, work, first meetings
The gold standard for asking someone to repeat themselves politely is:
📝 もう一度言っていただけますか? — Could you say that one more time?
The key piece is 〜ていただけますか — a humble request form that means "would you do me the favor of...". Pair it with もう一度 (one more time) and you've got the most universally safe version.
For a step softer:
📝 すみません、もう一度お願いします。 — Sorry, one more time please.
⚠️ Avoid もう一度言ってください in formal settings — ください is closer to a command. With a stranger or boss, it can land too direct.
🐢 2. "Could you slow down?"
Sometimes you heard the words but they were too fast. The polite ask:
📝 もう少しゆっくり話していただけますか? — Could you speak a little more slowly?
For casual contexts:
📝 もう少しゆっくりお願いします。 — A bit slower, please.
💡 Tip: Avoid ゆっくり話してください with strangers — too imperative. The 〜ていただけますか version is much softer.
🤔 3. "What does that mean?" — when the words were clear but the meaning wasn't
This is different from asking for a repeat. The word came through, but you don't know what it means.
📝 どういう意味ですか? — What do you mean?
If you want to be very polite:
📝 別の言い方で説明していただけますか? — Could you explain that another way?
🔁 4. "So, you mean...?" — confirming understanding
When the speaker said a lot and you want to check you got the gist:
📝 つまり、〜ですか? — So, you're saying...? 📝 〜ということですか? — Does that mean ~?
Both let you summarize and confirm. つまり carries a stronger "to sum up" nuance.
👫 5. Casual — for friends
With close friends, the polite endings can sound stiff. Use:
📝 もう一度言って。 — Say it again. (casual command) 📝 え? — Huh? (very short, very casual) 📝 何て? — What?
📌 Sakura's recap
- Polite stranger / boss → もう一度言っていただけますか?
- Too fast? → もう少しゆっくり話していただけますか?
- Word unclear? → どういう意味ですか?
- Summarizing to confirm? → つまり、〜ですか?
- Friend talking? → え? or 何て?
Don't pretend to understand. Asking once is a tenth as awkward as having to ask later when the conversation has moved on. Most Japanese speakers will switch into a clearer mode the moment you signal you're following carefully. 🌸
