🗣️ 'Oishii' is fine — but the locals are saying something different

美味おいしい (oishii) is the textbook word for delicious. Everyone learns it. But sit at a table with Japanese Gen Z and you'll hear a whole different vocabulary — words that signal I can't articulate how good this is.

Let me give you the cheat sheet.

🚀 飛ぶ: 'this sends me into orbit'

飛とぶ literally means to fly. As Gen Z food slang, it means the food is so impactful my consciousness just flew away.

📝 Real lines

このラーメンのスープ、マジで飛とぶぞ！ — This ramen broth literally sends me!
美味おいしすぎて飛とんだ… — So good I just flew away...

Origins: a famous pro-wrestler said 飛ぶぞ on a TV food segment and it became a meme.

🏆 優勝: 'this is the winner'

優勝ゆうしょう literally means victory / first place. As slang, it's the ultimate compliment for a perfect combination or the #1 thing I've had today.

📝 Real lines

この組くみ合あわせは優勝ゆうしょう確定かくてい。 — This combo is the definitive winner.
今日きょうのお昼ひる、ステーキ丼どんで優勝ゆうしょうした。 — Today's lunch — steak donburi — total win.

Used standalone: これは優勝。 = This. Wins.

💀 ヤバい: the swiss-army adjective

ヤバい (originally risky / dangerous) has flipped into the all-purpose Gen Z reaction word. Context decides whether it's positive or negative.

📖 ヤバい by context

Tone of voice does the disambiguating. Rising excited tone = positive. Falling resigned tone = negative.

🐛 バグる: 'my brain just bugged out'

From computer-speak — バグ (bug) + る (make-it-a-verb) = to malfunction. Used when food is so good it short-circuits your brain.

📝 Example

美味おいしすぎて頭あたまがバグった！ — So good my brain glitched!

Newer than 飛ぶ but climbing in popularity.

🧠 語彙力死がんだ: 'my vocabulary died'

語彙力ごいりょくが死しんだ — my vocabulary just died. The half-joke meta-comment Gen Z uses to mean I literally cannot articulate.
